A prison staffer is in a serious condition after being attacked by a young inmate at the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.

A Community and Public Sector Union Victoria spokesman said an acting supervisor was attacked in one of the secure units on Monday night.

It’s understood to be the third staff assault in the facility this year.

It comes a month after another prison worker was allegedly punched by an 18-year-old inmate armed with a roll-on deodorant bottle, leaving him with a broken nose and two broken eye sockets.

The spokesman said Monday’s assault was “unprovoked” and “violent”, that happened at one of the most tense times for the Youth Justice centre.

“This time of night, just before lockdown, is very volatile as these inmates are directed to head back to rooms to be secure,” he said.

The supervisor suffered serious head and facial injuries.

Police and paramedics were called to the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre at 7.30pm following the alleged assault.

An Ambulance Victoria spokeswoman said a man was treated for upper body injuries, and taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said male inmate remains in custody and would be interviewed at a later date.

The Herald Sun is aware of three staff members and one inmate who have been assaulted in the Malsmbury facility this year.

In March a teenager was left in a serious condition following a jailhouse assault in the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.

There were two assaults in January, including a staffer who was attacked with a weapon made from a mop handle, and a male worker in a secure unit was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
