Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre assault leaves young man in serious condition

Police are investigating after a young man was left in a serious condition following a jailhouse assault in the Malmsbury Youth Justice Centre.

Ambulance Victoria confirmed that paramedics were called to the low security juvenile detention facility at 5pm on Thursday, March 4.

A spokeswoman said a man was treated for upper body injuries and was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokeswoman said a second person was also taken to Bendigo Hospital for further assessment.

She said the matter had been referred to police.

“The department takes the safety and security of all staff and young people seriously,” she said.

“Violent behaviour or assaults at youth justice centres are absolutely unacceptable.”
