The victim of a hit run in Kyneton says he is lucky to be alive after the terrifying incident.
Josh Millard, 33, suffered a broken nose, broken cheek bone, six broken ribs and five fractured vertebrae, along with cuts and bruises, after he was hit by a driver who failed to stop over the Easter long weekend.
Speaking from hospital on Wednesday, Mr Millard said he doesn’t remember much from the incident but had been told he was walking home from a local footy game with a mate when he fell onto the road and became unconscious.
His mate went two doors down to get some help from his mum to move Mr Millard, and in that time Mr Millard was hit by a car.
He said when he woke up in hospital and found out what happened he was beside himself.
“I’m lucky to be here, it could have been a lot worse,” he said.
Mr Millard said the driver who left him for dead was a coward.
“For a person to drive off after running over something… that is just not right.”
Sergeant Mark Street said police had swept the area but had failed to find any CCTV of the incident.
He said as Mr Millard was a “bigger lad” it was likely the driver knew they had hit something.
He said locals said the sound of the car hitting Mr Millard made quite a severe thump.
Police believe the driver, who may have been in a 4WD, may have dragged Mr Millard down the road.
“The unfortunate side of this is somebody has driven over Josh and left him on the side of the road bleeding,” he said.
“Everyone has a moral obligation to pull over, see what they’ve hit, and render assistance if need be.”
Due to the long weekend and increased visitors in the area, police are investigating if the driver may have been from another area of Victoria.
