Bendigo’s long-awaited dream of a multimillion-dollar airport is a step closer to being realised after council signed a funding agreement with the federal government.
The government recently matched the state’s $4.5m commitment with Greater Bendigo City Council contributing almost $1m.
The redevelopment will include a new departure lounge, carpark, improved lightning and landscaping.
A security screening area, waiting lounge, a new administration building and equipment shed are also in the works.
Bendigo council’s chief executive Craig Niemann said he was hopeful the project could be delivered by the middle of 2023.
“The city recently called for construction tenders and is in the process of evaluating the submissions. We look forward to announcing the successful tenderer and progressing this project,” Mr Niemann said
The Federal Government announced in its latest budget the funding would go towards the project five years after the council first requested the money.
Deputy Prime Minister and Nationals leader Barnaby Joyce announced in a joint statement with other politicians in January the Coalition was committed to the project.
“The project will spark almost $23m in local economic activity and support 49 jobs during the construction period alone,” Mr Joyce said.
