A Bendigo man ran into the street in his “jocks” to aid a woman who was “screaming for help”, beating her alleged abuser with a baseball bat, a court has heard.

Leon Lewis, 21, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing injury after bashing a man on Napier St in White Hills.

The court heard a 34-year-old man was across the road yelling at a woman on Napier St in May last year when Lewis ran across the road in his “jocks” to intervene after he heard the woman “screaming for help”.

The court heard the man said to Lewis “you got something to say, junkie c--t?”, before Lewis attacked him with “fists flying”, while the alleged abuser defended himself with a “scooter”.

Lewis then went and grabbed a metal baseball bat before knocking the man to the ground.

A short video was played in court that showed Lewis striking the complainant with the bat while he was on the ground.

Lewis’ lawyer argued he had gone to the woman’s defence after he heard her screaming, while police argued it was more likely he went and attacked the man after he called Lewis a “junkie c--t”.

Magistrate Russell Kelly said Lewis may have had the “best of intentions”, but the situation “just got out of hand”.

Mr Kelly told Lewis that just because the victim was “a mouth” didn’t mean he should bash him.

Mr Kelly told Lewis to “calm the farm”, sentencing him to a $350 fine with conviction.
