The Catholic Church is selling an enormous slice of Bendigo real estate in one of the region’s most expensive suburbs.
Colliers International Bendigo has been tasked with selling the 3ha site at Kennington, along with the buildings that made up the former Poor Clares monastery.
Sandhurst Dioceses announced in 2020 that, after 50 years, the home of the order at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit, Kennington, would be wound up.
“The number of sisters has declined over the years and there are currently three Poor Clare Sisters in Kennington, who are advancing in years,” the church said in a statement at the time.
The Sisters have been redeployed to other areas.
The religious order, known as the Poor Clare Colettines, follows the tradition of St Clare and St Francis of Assisi.
The followers live in enclosed communities of prayer, silence, and work.
Colliers International real estate agent Travis Hurst said a price guide had been set of just under $3m.
“This reclusive oasis is very central to Bendigo and offers extensive landscaped grounds, sweeping views and a sense of privacy from the surrounding development,” he said.
The total building area is 970sq m, comprising 12 bedrooms, halls, chapel, a kitchen and numerous living areas.
It also has some manicured gardens surrounding the building.
Mr Hurst said there were a wide range of potential uses for the site including residential allotments, a retirement village, educational facility, a not for profit enterprise or private residence.
It is zoned for general residential purposes and partially Special Use Zone (Schedule 1).
