Aggravated burglaries, 70-year-old carjacked in Bendigo Labour Day weekend crime spree

A brazen crime spree in Bendigo over the Labour Day long weekend saw armed thugs carjack a 70-year-old man as residents reported multiple broad daylight home invasions.

A group of armed thugs carjacked a 70-year-old Bendigo man as residents reported multiple broad daylight home invasions and high speed police chases of stolen cars over the Labour Day long weekend.

Bendigo detectives are investigating an aggravated carjacking in Kangaroo Flat on Saturday, alongside several aggravated burglaries and car thefts in the area.

It is understood offenders used weapons to carjack a 70-year-old man on Station St in Kangaroo Flat about 6.20pm.

The offenders dragged him out of the vehicle and made off with the car, leaving the victim with minor injuries.

The victim’s Nissan has since been recovered, but the carjackers remain at large.

Detectives are also investigating whether the carjacking is linked to a spate of aggravated burglaries and car thefts in the Kangaroo Flat area between 5pm and 8pm on Saturday.

Several properties on Curlew Court and a property on Cannon St were hit along with several cars broken into in the area.

An aggravated burglary was also reported on Woodend Rd in Golden Gully.

Several witnesses reported police pursuing cars believed to be stolen on Saturday night and Sunday.

One witness reported police deploying road spikes on the corner of Nelson St and Bright St in the early hours of Sunday morning amid a police pursuit.

No arrests have been made yet and the crooks remain on the run.
