A man and a woman are in hospital after a car smashed into a power pole in South Gippsland.

Two people are in hospital after a car crashed into a power pole in Leongatha on Sunday.

Emergency services were called to McCartins St, near Johnson St, about 2pm following reports of a crash.

Bass Coast Highway Patrol are now investigating the circumstances following the crash.

Police have been told a blue Toyota Rav4 was travelling along the Bass Highway when the driver lost control about 1.15pm.

The car veered off the road and crashed into a power pole.

The driver, a 57-year-old Kilcunda man, suffered upper body injuries and was flown to Dandenong Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

His passenger a 58-year-old Kilcunda woman suffered upper body injuries and was taken by road, in a stable condition, to Dandenong Hospital.

The investigation remains ongoing.
