Thomson: Police search for body after car found submerged in flooded creek near Gippsland

The body of a man has been found after his car swept away in floodwaters at Thomson in Victoria’s east.

Body of the missing man who was swept away in flood waters in Thomson has been found.

Search and Rescue Squad divers found the man inside his submerged vehicle on Tuesday morning.

The driver, in his 60s, got into trouble caught out trying to cross the swollen Thomson River after Gippsland was lashed with more than 250 mm of rain since early Saturday.

The heavy rain triggered a major flood warning for the Cann and Genoan rivers as the rain water moved downstream to Thomson.

The driver’s friend saw the dramatic incident unfold in Thomson about 1.30pm on Monday and tried unsuccessfully to rescue him before raising the alarm.

Tthe pair were in two vehicles when they tried to cross a river near Sullivan Track.

The driver of the Nissan Patrol got into trouble when his car dropped in a deep section of the crossing and was swept away.

Parts of Gippsland were hit with more than 250mm of rain since early Saturday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
