Spear accidentally shoots through teens foot in Inverloch

A night out on the water spearfishing has turned into a dramatic — and painful — rescue for group of Korumburra friends.

A hand-held barbed spear has accidentally gone through a teenager’s foot as he was out spearfishing with his friends to celebrate a birthday.

Riley Sullivan, Braith Minchin, Hamish Boys and Zac McGrath were spearfishing near Townsend Bluff in Inverloch at 11pm on Wednesday when they got into trouble in the water.

The Korumburra boys realised they were standing in a sandbar and the water was closing in so they started to head back to land.

As the boys were swimming to safety, Mr McGrath – who has been fishing for his whole life – accidentally speared Mr Minchin in the foot.

Emergency services were called to Inverloch to rescue four teens after a spearfishing incident.

“We all had to carry Braith back to the rocks where it was dry,” Mr McGrath said.

“At the same time we were calling emergency services.”

Mr McGraith said he felt guilty about injuring his friend but glad he was alright.

“He seems to be going good in hospital,” he said.

“He doesn’t seem to be in a lot of pain.”

Mr Minchin was winched to safety by Air Ambulance Victoria and taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The other boys were taken safely to shore by an SES boat.

The 15-year-old boys were celebrating Mr McGrath’s 16th birthday.

Among the dramatic rescue, the boys managed to catch flounder and garfish during the night.
