The South Gippsland Dairy and Farming Expo celebrated its 25th anniversary this week.
Hosted at the Korumburra Showgrounds on Wednesday and Thursday from 10am to 3pm, the expo provided an opportunity for members of the dairying fraternity to showcase the latest in dairy innovation and technology.
The two-day event featured about 120 agricultural-based exhibitors.
Chairman Cliff Wallace, who has been on the committee since the beginning, said ahead of the expo that despite the weather, the team were excited and preparations were going well.
“We actually had a closed work site here until 2pm yesterday (Monday) so we’re a bit later being able to finish our set-up,” Mr Wallace said.
“But we’re optimistic — everybody’s coming in and setting up today, and the exhibitors have all been great about it.”
Mr Wallace said the committee was looking forward to promising, “sunshiny” days.
“We’ve had probably 130 knot winds here, and we had all our marquees ready,” he said.
“Many of the people that are still helping set-up have been on the committee for 25 years since its inception, so they’re still as eager, they’ve just got a little more age.
“And essentially the Dairy Expo back 20 years ago had the same aim — which was to make a contribution to the dairy industry and make a one-stop shop for farmers that was exclusively dairy or milk harvesting products.”
Mr Wallace said the expo was meant to be a place for people with small hobby farms — right through to dairy, sheep and beef farmers — who can come and do business.
“And network with like-minded people and then go home to their busy lives,” he said.
“During the time the expo has been running, it has also dispersed $600,000 back into the local community around here.”
Mr Wallace added the main goals of the committee was to showcase the love of dairy.
“A lot of the committee members were quite large and still are large dairy farmers, so they wanted to showcase their industry to the region so that people realise the impact that agriculture has to these small communities,” he said.
“And to also make a contribution back to the region.
“It’s been quite a good success story for those 25 years.”
