Regional Victorians are turning on each other, abusing people they assume are defying lockdown because of Melbourne dealership stickers on their cars.

Lockdown lifted in country areas on Friday and there is no limit on the distance regional Victorians can travel.

But shockingly, regional residents have been at the centre of unwarranted attacks by their own people.

Traralgon resident Jodie Oliver found a scathing note left on her car on Friday that said “Get back to Melbourne selfish c****.”

She said she was targeted because of the Melbourne dealership name on her licence plates.

“I was shocked to find the note,” she said.

“I think it’s incredibly sad that this virus has created so much divide and judgment between people.”

Another woman from Inverloch said she was abused in a Wonthaggi car park because someone thought she was from the city.

“We were confused as to why she would think that from just looking at the car,” the woman said in a Facebook group.

“Our car has a Melbourne dealership sticker on the rear window, as do most cars.

“Maybe that sticker prompted her vitriolic outburst.”

Nervous country folk are now removing any trace of Melbourne from their vehicles.

Senior Sergeant Peter Watson said abuse towards others needed to stop.

“People shouldn’t assume things because obviously cars can be bought from anywhere,” he said.

“We shouldn’t assume just because there’s a sticker on a car, they are from out of town.”

Sen-Sgt Watson said alleged breaches should be reported to the police or the department of health.
