A Phillip Island drug user threatened to kill himself and his ex-girlfriend because their four-year relationship ended, a court has heard.

The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was sentenced at Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on October 28 after pleading guilty to charges including criminal damage, making threats to kill and stalking.

The court heard the man sent multiple text messages to his ex-girlfriend on earlier this year saying he was going to kill himself due to the breakdown of their relationship.

The woman attended his address to check on his welfare but the man harassed her.

To prevent his ex from leaving, the man grabbed her phone and attempted to break it in half.

He also threatened to tear the her car apart and slash the tyres.

The woman managed to escape and called the police.

During this time, she received multiple phone calls from the man who again threatened to kill himself.

In five and a half hours, the man called his ex 90 times.

The next day, the woman left for work and again had multiple missed calls and messages from the man saying he was waiting for her to return home.

The man threatened to kill her and attempted to call her a further 38 times.

In custody, the man said he smoked ice and was a consistent cannabis user.

Magistrate Guillaume Bailin said the man needed to be rehabilitated.

“I have regards for the need to rehabilitate you, that is to assist you and support you while not maintaining oversight at the issues that operated at the time being a drug addiction, alcohol issues and mental health,” Magistrate Bailin said.

During the hearing, the man said he understood the severity of his behaviour.

He was sentenced to two months imprisonment with a 18 month community corrections order.
