A Wonthaggi painter has been granted bail to look after his sick mum after he allegedly stole money and other items from businesses in the Bass Coast.
Thomas Chadwick, 34, fronted Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court on Monday after being charged with theft and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
Police allege Chadwick stole money from multiple Wonthaggi businesses including Emily’s Nail Salon, Kirrak Kiosk and Souvanny Thai Restaurant this year.
He also allegedly stole a security camera from Bunnings Warehouse in Wonthaggi.
Chadwick’s lawyer Michael Mazzone said the painter had anxiety and struggled with drugs and alcohol.
Mr Mazzone said Chadwick lived with his mum and was the main carer for her as she had significant health problems.
From custody, Chadwick said he was “scared” and “sick of this life”.
“I’ve never had the responsibility of looking after my mum before,” he said.
“All I can think about is her sitting at home with nothing.”
Prosecution said Chadwick was an “unacceptable risk”.
“He had stable accommodation and had a painting job all while still committing an array of alleged offending,” they said.
Magistrate Jelena Popovic slammed Chadwick’s alleged behaviour
“You’re showing all the hallmarks of someone that wants to stay in custody,” she said.
“I’m trying to get this message through to you that before you make stupid decisions, you realise what the consequences are.”
Chadwick was granted bail and will return to court at a later date.
