Crowds of people dressed up in vintage costumes as part of an iconic Gippsland museum’s mile stone.

On Saturday from 10am, the Old Gippstown Heritage Park on Lloyd St in Moe celebrated its 50th anniversary since it first opened on March 10, 1973.

The open-air history attraction has an incredible atmosphere of the region’s past from the 1930s to the 1940s.

The museum has eight acres of parkland and is a popular spot for visitors to stop by on their travels.

Manager Kellie Simpson said ahead of time there were about 20-30 volunteers helping out to prepare for the anniversary.

“They are all really excited to get a lot of people into the park and celebrate the history of the park,” Ms Simpson said.

“We’re trying to focus on what’s really important to the park over the last 50 years and protecting the assets and buildings we’ve got here.”

She said it was a beautiful community space and there would be a lot of activities for people to get involved in on the day.

“We’re having Devonshire tea, horses and carts and we’re having old movies running,” Ms Simpson said.

“We have a farrier and he’s going to do a bit of whip cracking as well — and there’s a sausage sizzle and music in the rotunda.”

Ms Simpson said a best dressed competition will also be running and encourages guests to dress up for their chance to win prizes.

“It’s going to be a really fun day — it will be a really nice celebration,” she said.

“We’re also planning on putting together a time capsule which we’ve been gathering items for.

“It’s going to be 1800s style outfits — there might be a cowboy or two — the period of buildings and assets that we have is from 1833 to 1940.”

Ms Simpson thanked all the clubs and organisations that helped support the event.

“We’re trying to utilize different groups that are local to the area who have all this knowledge and skills and can talk to people about it on the day,” she said.

“We’re going to have a raffle on the day with some really good prizes from local businesses.

“Old Gippstown is a really unique place for this area, there’s nothing else like it here.”

Ms Simpson added said it was important for the Gippsland area that they protect what they’ve got.

“It’s a really special place — and I think that people that come here really love it — so we want it to keep going for a lot longer,” she said.

The Herald Sun joined in on the all the fun and captured photos of all the dressed up guests.
