McDonalds in Wonthaggi is getting a brand new look and more car parks

Some residents are worried about noise and safety but that hasn’t stopped the Wonthaggi’s Macca’s outlet from moving ahead with its facelift. Here’s what to expect.

Wonthaggi’s McDonalds outlet will push forward with an overdue facelift, more car parking and another drive-through lane despite community concerns over noise and safety.

Despite multiped objections, the planning permit for the business was approved ay Wednesday’s Bass Coast Shire Council meeting.

McDonalds will turn the block of land next to the existing restaurant into car parking that will ultimately replace those spaces lost when it adds another drive-through lane.

The council said that anyone who had visited or driven past McDonalds during a busy period would “welcome” the expansion.

The changes mean the restaurant will have 119 internal seats, a new McCafe preparation and service area, new drive-through service and preparation area, a party room, updated playground, sales, service and preparation area and updated toilet facilities for patrons and staff.

The external finishes of all facades of the building will include metal and timber cladding with paint finishes.

There will be 13 more car parks and extra bicycle spaces to encourage alternate forms of transport.

“The building will be retained as a contemporary modest built form that fits well within the surrounding combined commercial and residential precinct,” the proposal said.

“The proposed car parking area is well located being adjacent to the existing convenience restaurant (McDonald’s) and adjacent to Graham St and Billson St.

“This arrangement will assist to manage safety and efficiently the traffic generated by the proposed extension of the restaurant.”

The proposal said the upgrades would “support the local economy” by promoting “continued growth and diversity”.

Councillor Ron Bauer said he was concerned about the negative implications for health that expansion of a fast food restaurant brings but it would also allow for “further employment opportunities for young people”.

The council received a number of objections, with residents sighting noise and safety concerns in their submissions.

“There will be an increase of traffic on Graham St and the roundabout on the corner of Graham Street and Billson Street,” one submission said.

“Creating a traffic hazard for pedestrians, particularly for people in wheelchairs, scooters, with walkers or walking stick.”

There was also a concern about noise pollution impacting surrounding properties but the council said this would be reduced by a noise-barrier fence along the residential boundary.

There was a concern this fence would create a blind spot for vehicles and pedestrians using the driveways.

The council said there would be sufficient signage to eliminate safety concerns.

The Bass Coast Shire councillors passed the permit unanimously.
