Latrobe Valley: Man arrested after high speed chase

A Morwell man has been charged with reckless conduct endangering life after allegedly ramming police after a high-speed chase.

Police have arrested a man in the Latrobe Valley overnight, after he allegedly rammed a police vehicle attempting to escape a high-speed chase.

The 26-year-old Morwell man was allegedly seen driving at up to 200km per hour on the Princes Hwy in Taralgon by a police helicopter, shortly after 9pm on April 13.

A Victoria Police spokesman said officers were unable to intercept the vehicle initially, with the man allegedly failing to stop and speeding away.

He was allegedly followed by the helicopter to an address in Morwell, where he is accused of ramming a police vehicle before his arrest.

“Thankfully no one was injured,” the spokesman said.

The Morwell man was charged with reckless conduct endangering life, driving at a dangerous speed, driving while suspended and failing to stop.

He was given police bail and will next appear at the Latrobe Magistrates’ Court on September 21.

Police have launched a two week crackdown on dangerous driving behaviour ahead of the Easter and ANZAC DAY weekends, with plans to “saturate” high-risk areas.

Assistant commissioner for road policing Glenn Weir said the force would focus on holiday drivers in regional areas in an effort to reduce the road toll.
