An unlicensed motorcyclist made sure police knew about his latest antics after he crashed in front of them, throwing himself and his passenger to the road.
Graham Brown, 43, pleaded guilty at the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to charges of careless driving and driving while his licence was suspended.
On November 29 last year about 2am, police saw a Honda motorbike travelling along the Bass Highway in Bass
Police followed the rider, who turned onto Corinella Rd and continued to drive, but then failed to navigate a right hand turn at an intersection, causing the rider to lose control of the bike.
Police approached the pair, confirmed the rider was Brown and discovered his licence was suspended.
When police asked Brown about his suspended licence, he told them he wasn’t one hundred per cent sure whether he had it or not.
He also told police it was dark and he misjudged the corner when he was turning.
Brown told the court was planning to work as a refrigeration mechanic and his terminally ill dad died a week before the incident.
The court heard Brown was riding past his mum’s home to ensure she was OK, but then drove too far and did not see police behind him.
The loss of Brown’s dad greatly affected him and he has been unable to return to work, the court heard.
Magistrate Andrew Halse took Brown’s circumstances into consideration, but said he made matters worse by riding a vehicle unlicensed.
Mr Halse fined Brown $600 with a conviction and his licence was suspended for two months.
