A Sale man who attacked his ex-girlfriend’s housemate because he was “angry” that she had found a new partner, has been put behind bars.
Joshua Turnbull, 22, pleaded guilty in the County Court on Wednesday to one charge of aggravated burglary, one charge of intentionally causing injury and one charge of criminal damage.
The court heard Turnbull and his friends has been drinking on February 27, 2020.
Just prior to midnight, Turnbull left a bar and met a friend who observed him to be “really angry”.
On numerous occasions Turnbull said that he wanted “to get someone”.
Turnbull’s friend tried to calm him down so they walked towards Turnbull’s friend’s sister’s house which was next to the victim’s house.
Turnbull went to the victim’s house and banged on the door multiple times, then broke in through the loungeroom window.
Turnbull punched the victim in the head, asking where his ex-girlfriend was.
The victim said she was not there and Turnbull continued to punch and kick the victim.
Turnbull said “I should stab you” and then walked out of the house.
Judge Irene Lawson said Turnbull’s ex-girlfriend had found a new partner.
“You were angry about her actions and that forms part of the context to your offending,” Judge Lawson said.
Judge Lawson said even though Turnbull’s showed “genuine remorse”, his behaviour towards the victim was “disgraceful”.
“Your aggressive and unprovoked attack is deserving of condemnation,” she said.
Turnbull was sentenced to two years imprisonment with a non-parole period of nine months.
He was also ordered to pay $643 to the victim for compensation.
