Firefighters have been called to a blaze at a pine plantation in the state’s southeast, where large volumes of smoke can be seen in the sky.
Emergency services were called to the incident at the corner of Old Melbourne and Maryvale roads, near the Lyndale Poultry in Morwell just before 5pm on Tuesday.
“On scene a large pile of rubbish approximately 50sq m was on fire,” a CFA spokesperson said.
“An excavator will be brought in this morning to pull the remaining rubbish apart.”
Posts on social media suggest that rubbish has been dumped and set on fire, or a burn-off is happening in the area.
The incident was under control at 5.56pm and deemed safe at 6.25pm.
It’s understood Victoria Police are not treating the fire as suspicious.
Firefighters hooked up a house to a fire hydrant just opposite the Maryvale Hospital.
Anyone with further information or witnessed the incident is urged to contact the Morwell police station on (03) 5131 5000.
