A Gippsland homeowner has narrowly avoided being crushed by an out-of-control car after a P-plater crashed into the side of their house.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Walker Dr in Drouin about 10am on Sunday, where the young driver hit a kerb, left the road and knocked down a tree.
The car then crashed through two fences before ramming into the house.
“The driver of the vehicle was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” a police spokesperson said.
“The exact circumstance surrounding the incident are yet to be determined.”
A nearby neighbour, who didn’t want to be named, described the sound of the crash as like a “gas explosion”.
Significant damage was done to the study and laundry of the home, and the clean-up started about 1pm on Tuesday.
The owner of the home, who also asked not to be named, said he was inside when the driver crashed into his property.
He said he was sitting in his study, near the window, watching videos on YouTube to help with his train-building hobby, before the crash.
“It was like a bomb going off behind me,” the man said.
He said many of hobby items including models trains were damaged in the incident.
“I can’t believe all of this happened,” he said.
The owner was also hit on the head by a piece of debris and was assessed by paramedics at the scene.
He said his new washing machine was also destroyed, and it was lucky the pipes didn’t break.
“It would have been a hell of a mess if they had bursted,” the owner said.
He said his hobby items, including the controls, digital chips, engines and kits were worth more than $1000.
The trains were part of a giant model project of the North East Dundas in Tasmania he had been building in his shed for more than a year.
A tradesman said the vehicle went through the retaining wall which would cost thousands of dollars to fix and could take months to repair the damage.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dashcam/CCTV footage or information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers Victoria on 1800 333 000, file a confidential report online or contact the Drouin police station on (03) 5625 2003.
