Dean Robert Lont faced the Latrobe Valley Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday pleading guilty to a string of charges including, burglary, theft, unlicensed driving, possessing methamphetamine and failing to stop on police direction.

Throughout February, the 34-year-old broke into multiple homes across Traralgon, stealing CCTV cameras, jewellery, chequebooks and cash.

In one instance, he knocked on the door of a home but was scared off when a frightened woman called her father in tears thinking he was going to break in.

In the same time period, while driving a stolen Subaru, Lont stole $106 worth of petrol from an Endeavour service station, $103 worth from a BP in Rosedale and $110 worth from a BP in Trafalgar.

On February 28, police spotted Lont standing near the stolen Subaru.

Officers broke the driver’s window trying to get the thief to stop, but he sped away.

On March 1, after Lont had broken into yet another home, police tracked him to his Traralgon home where they eventually found him hiding in the toilet.

Defence lawyer Stephen Peterson said his client’s dad had passed away from cancer in 2020 and that Lont, who was appearing via video-link, would participate in a rehabilitation program.

Magistrate Natalie Heynes said the matters were serious and invasions of the victims’ personal space and safety.

She requested further information on the rehabilitation program and adjourned the matter, remanding Lont in custody until August.
