A Clyde delivery driver has been booted off the roads after he was busted speeding almost 100km/h in a 60km/h in South Gippsland.
Venkata Pulicharla, 27, pleaded guilty at the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to exceeding the speed limit by more than 35km/h but less than 45km/h.
The court heard Pulicharla was caught speeding at 97km/h in a 60km/h zone on the South Gippsland Hwy, south of Korumburra, about 2am on July 24 this year.
After police pulled Pulicharla over, he was fined $741 and told his licence would be suspended for six months.
When asked by one of the officers how fast he thought he was going, he said “like 75”.
Pulicharla, who chose to take the matter to court, said he normally worked in Laverton for his job and it was his first time doing work in a regional area.
He told the court he was “very tired” as he had driven six hours that day.
“At the time I finished (work) in the Korumburra area so I thought it was going to be 80 to 100,” Pulicharla said.
He said as he was driving out of Korumburra, he sped up too soon while he was still in a 60km/h zone.
When Judicial Registrar Anthony Gwynne asked why Pulicharla sped up, he said he didn’t have his high beams on and couldn’t see the sign.
“When I turned on the high beams I checked the speeding kilometres so I slowed down,” he said.
Pulicharla tried to save his licence but Mr Gwynne said there was nothing he could do.
“I don’t have a choice — I don’t have the power to make to make it less than six months,” Mr Gwynne said.
“The government make the laws and the court has to enforce the laws.
“You just can’t afford to be driving on the outskirts of towns like Korumburra at such a high speed.”
Pulicharla was fined $500 without a conviction and his licence was suspended for six months.
