Beth Grenness: Young Bass footballer fundraising to get Adelaide after being selected for state team

She’s a Bass Valley Primary School student set for a future in football after being selected for the Victorian state team — but she needs help to get there.

A young and feisty yet humble footy star has been selected to represent Victoria in the under 12s state AFL team.

Beth Grenness, 12 of Corinella, was selected as one of 23 players to represent Victoria in Adelaide where she will compete for a week against the other states.

In August Beth will board a plane for the first time after the school captain at Bass Valley Primary School and co-captain of the Kilcunda-Bass footy team, The Panthers, was nominated by her PE teacher before competing in tryouts.

Her mum, Kelly Bettridge, said Beth gave it her all.

“There were two rounds of trials. At the first one there was over 100 kids and then that got cut to 56 and from there they made the final selection of 23,” he said.

Beth, the youngest of seven children, has grown up watching her brothers play footy and can hold her own against her brothers, her mum says.

“Our life has been football,” she said.

“Beth plays every sport, she loves it but has a real passion for footy. She is a phenomenal athlete.”

Beth said she was “nervous” to head to Adelaide but she can’t wait to get out and “just play some footy”.

Beth plays in the midfield and her dad, Tim Grenness, saidshe and her mum were “so proud of her”.

“She loves the competition,” Tim said.

Kelly added: “We were all very excited, I was driving home and stopped to fill up with fuel to check the announcement. To have our youngest going along and doing this, everyone is just so proud of her.”

An online fundraiser has been organised to help the family pay for the costs associated with travelling and uniforms.

“We have to buy uniforms, club fees, flights for Beth and an accompanying adult, accommodation for seven nights for two people, transport to and from games and cover the week‘s wages lost to be able to take Beth to Adelaide,” Kelly said.

The uniform alone is set to cost $150.
