Police have warned they will be out in full force this summer ahead of huge crowds expected to gather in the Bass Coast.
Senior Constable Chris Brinkman told The Bass Coast News police were expecting a busy summer season.
“We think it’s going to be a bumper season given the strange year we have all had with COVID-19 and we have seen that already with the last couple of weekends,” he said.
“The Bass Coast has been very, very busy.”
Sen-Constable Brinkman said motorists should expect to see an increase of police presence on the roads.
“Operation Roadwise will be running this year so people can expect to see more police out over the Christmas and New Year period including state highway members and local uniform members,” he said.
“They will be conducting drug tests, checking licences and registrations and enforcing the correct speed limits.”
Sen-Constable Brinkman warned motorists to expect delays at popular holiday destinations like Phillip Island and Inverloch.
“We have had some good roadworks done with roundabouts on Phillip Island so we are hoping that will help but it’s important for people to plan ahead,” he said.
“If there is a traffic incident, unfortunately on some stretches of road there is limited capability for us to divert the traffic so people need to be patient and follow the directions of police and VicRoads.”
After the tragic death of a 24-year-old at Smiths Beach on November 29, Sen-Constable Brinkman said it was important for swimmers of all abilities to be cautious.
“If people are going to the beach and they are not strong swimmers, consider not going to the surf beaches,” Sen-Constable Brinkman said.
“There are plenty of safe bay beaches people can go to.”
He urged Victorians to visit patrolled beaches and swim between the flags.
