A Victorian council is dishing out freebies in a bid to become the state’s most vaccinated region.

Bass Coast Shire Council launched its #VaxForBass campaign in Wonthaggi on Friday in the race to become the first municipality to have 80 per cent of its people jabbed.

Those who show their proof of vaccination will be rewarded with free movie passes, sausage sizzles, coffee, doughnuts and takeaway food from businesses in the area.

Council’s chief executive Ali Wastie said the vaccine was the answer to helping the economy recover.

“Our goal is to get to that target of an 80 per cent vaccination rate as fast as possible so we can return to the lifestyle we love and help our businesses and economy recover,’’ she said.

“Vaccination is our way out of this health crisis and it is also the way to fast-track the return to the Bass Coast region of Melbourne tourists who are vital to our economy.’’

Ms Wastie said the campaign helped show people a future beyond Covid.

As of August 15, 28.4 per cent of people aged over 15 have been fully vaccinated in Gippsland which included Bass Coast with 53.3 per cent of people aged over 15 having at least one dose of the vaccine.

Bass Coast Health chief executive Jan Child welcomed the new campaign.

“I encourage the community to be vaccinated as soon as possible to minimise the risk of them not only contracting Covid, and also the severity of the symptoms should they unfortunately be infected,” she said.

“We also remind our community members that even if you are vaccinated, you can still catch and spread the virus to unvaccinated people, including people you love or vulnerable community members.”

Ms Child said healthcare workers would work as hard as they could to get the community vaccinated.

The Community Vaccination Centre at Wonthaggi Town Hall is open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday 9am-4pm and Wednesday 10am to 6pm.
