Bass Coast and Gippsland whipped by strong winds, what has the damage been?

Bass Coast and Gippsland have been whipped by strong winds overnight, here’s what you need to know.

While the rest of the state continues to battle flooding, Bass Coast and Gippsland have had their own wild weather.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a strong wind warning for Port Phillip, Western Port, Central Gippsland Coast and East Gippsland Coast.

This wind warning is expected to remain in place until Tuesday.

A strong wind warning is issued for winds averaging from 26 knots up to 33 knots.

On Sunday night and Monday morning there were power outages across Bass Coast and Gippsland due to the wind.

There were reports of power outages across the regions which as of Monday morning had all been restored.

According to AusNet 1140 customers experienced a sustained power outage on Sunday night of longer than two hours and 1500 customers experienced momentary outages.

They said all of these were due to wind, mostly branches being blown over lines.

“We haven’t had any poles down as of yet but we have lots of crews still on standby and are keeping an eye on the weather,” an AusNet spokeswoman said.

In the 12 hours to 10.30am Monday SES crews responded to eight calls for wind related help, all relating to trees down, most over roads.

Two were in Inverloch, with others in Cowes, Traralgon, Alberton West, Meeniyan, Trafalgar and Warragul.

The SES reminded people on how to stay safe during strong and gale force wind events.

“Be aware – heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it’s windy or wet,” an SES spokesman said.
