A man who was busted driving more than twice the legal speed limit said he has become “incredibly anxious” over the matter and blames his own stupidity.

Andrew Rowe, 63, pleaded guilty in the Korumburra Court to one charge of exceeding the speed limit.

The court heard police caught him driving his Mercedes on Soldiers Rd, Bass at up to 203km/h in a 100km/h zone.

He later told police, “I’ve been stupid, I’m embarrassed”.

Rowe’s lawyer Tony Trood said the incident had caused Rowe huge stress and he had visited his GP for help dealing with the anxiety.

Mr Trood said Rowe “rightly regards” his reputation and record.

“He sets really high standards for himself and acts according to them,” Mr Trood said.

Leading Senior Constable Wilken-Eilers said Rowe was “remorseful” and otherwise of “good character”.

“However there is a need for denunciation and general deterrence with the alleged speed being 203km/h which is double the posted speed of 100km/h,” she said.

Sen-Constable Wilken-Eilers said he placed his three passengers at “significant risk of death or injury at the least”.

“I’ve been prosecuting for quite a while and I’ve never seen speed alleged that high,” Sen-Constable Wilken-Eilers.

Magistrate Kelly agreed it was an extremely high speed, but acknowledged Rowe had pleaded guilty early.

“Was it not for your good character and you being able to call on that, the penalty imposed by the court would be much more substantial and go beyond a fine,” he said.

Rowe’s licence was suspended for the minimum period of 12 months.

The case was adjourned for 12 months on conditions of good behaviour.

Rowe was ordered to donate $3000 to the Road Trauma Awareness Program.
