Bunnings Warehouse plans to open a brand new store in Wonthaggi that will double the size of the existing one.
The $22 million development will include a main warehouse, outdoor nursery, timber trade sales area, cafe and a playground.
The proposed store will be at the corner of McKenzie St and White Rd and is expected to create jobs for local residents and more than 130 construction jobs.
Bass Coast Shire Mayor Cr Brett Tessari said the proposed store was “fantastic” for local jobs and economy.
“It’s a strong sign of the confidence the industry has in the Bass Coast Shire and is exciting for the future growth of Wonthaggi as a regional centre,” Mayor Tessari said.
“The proposed development is expected to create at least 50 new employment opportunities, especially important at a time when the region is transitioning out of COVID-19”.
The store is planned to be more than 9,000sq m and mare than 200 parking spaces.
Bunnings spokeswoman Sally Powell said the proposed development represented a significant investment in the community.
“Bunnings’ further investment in the area will provide additional job opportunities for local residents,” she said.
“All our team members from the existing Wonthaggi smaller format store will transfer to the new warehouse once complete”.
Bass Coast Shire Council has decided to approve the permit, and a permit will be granted in 28 days if there are no appeals.
The store is expected to open at the end of 2021.
