An East Gippsland man busted driving without a licence has told a court he “used to be a psycho” and had been run over by seven cars.

Alan Thomas Coe, 65, fronted the Bairnsdale Magistrates Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to driving an unregistered vehicle and driving while his licence was suspended.

The Lakes Entrance man was driving on Church St when he was pulled over by police on the night of July 13 last year.

Officers discovered Coe’s licence was suspended and his car’s registration had expired.

Coe, who represented himself, told the court he suffered from bipolar which made him lose track of what he was doing and he had been run over by seven cars in the past.

He said after his wife died, he resorted to drinking a lot of alcohol, did drugs and claimed he used to be a “psycho”.

Coe added he had been taking medication and seeing doctors.

Magistrate Cynthia Lynch said Coe had a very limited history, to which he replied, “well, nothing in Victoria”.

She placed Coe on a good behaviour bond for six months and no conviction was recorded.
