The people behind a suspicious push for a 20-storey McDonald’s hotel in a small regional town have revealed the full extent of their prank.

YouTube channel Misfit Minds released a video on Tuesday titled ‘We Pranked an Entire Town’.

With branded vests, pens, and pamphlets, those behind the channel approached Beaufort residents in late January about a proposal for the “biggest McDonald’s in Australian history”.

In the video, four men knock on the doors of homes to explain their dummy plans to perplexed homeowners.

“Oh mate, I’d kill them,” one man replies when questioned whether he would accommodate some of the 1500 Chinese workers supposed to be part of the project.

“If they wouldn’t conform to my standards, I’d just smash them.”

“There’d be a revolution here, I reckon,” says another at the prospect of a local maccas.

The rest of the people depicted also express their distaste for the proposal, one man approached at a petrol station saying to put him down as a “get f---ed”.

Others showed more of a sense of humour, sharing a beer with the trio.

The three men then held an outdoor meeting in town on January 31, for which the group said it was later fined $1154 over the “street party”.

Some Beaufort locals picked up on the ploy before the video’s official release.

Afterwards, commentators on social media had mixed feelings about the prank, particularly in light of recent bushfires in the region.

“They didn’t fool everyone, they were the only fools,” one person said.

“Although funny to watch, I don’t know if I am completely comfortable with them targeting some vulnerable individuals just going about their day for a laugh,” said another.

Some appreciated the humour and said the video gave them a “much-needed laugh” and described it as “hilarious”.

The video says Misfit Minds will donate 10c to Beaufort for every like on the video until the end of March.
