Two west Victorians allegedly tried to trick police officers with number plates made of paper, unwittingly leading them to the scene of an alleged aggravated burglary.

Stawell police pulled over a Toyota Camry bearing false paper plates on Ararat Road after 3am on Monday.

It is alleged that while police spoke with the car’s driver, the passenger phoned Triple-0 to report a fake assault in an attempt to have the police called away.

The task was assigned to another unit, however, and when police phoned the passenger back they realised what had happened.

Searching the vehicle, police allegedly found cash, stolen items, and medication belonging to a Stawell resident.

Police went to the home on Robson Rd and confirmed an alleged aggravated burglary had taken place.

Nobody was hurt during the incident.

A 33-year-old Ararat woman was charged with burglary, two counts of theft, dealing with property suspected of crime, making a false report, going equipped to steal, and possessing a controlled weapon.

A 34-year-old Golden Point man was charged with burglary, two counts of theft, dealing with property suspected of crime, going equipped to steal, driving whilst disqualified, and using an unregistered motor vehicle.

Both were remanded in custody and will appear in court at a later date.
