A Ballarat business has suffered stolen stock and damage worth tens of thousands of dollars in a break-in earlier this week.

Formosa Gardens Nursery in Redan was broken into about 10.30pm on January 29, with alleged offenders causing extensive damage and stealing rare plants, including bonsais, Wollemi pines, and more.

When staff arrived about 7am on Thursday morning, the alleged burglars were still at the premises, having come and gone throughout the night.

After a verbal confrontation, they fled.

Video posted online by the business showed the “absolutely devastating” aftermath of the crime, with pots strewn across the ground.

Third-generation co-owner Kate said she felt “deflated” and “frustrated”.

“You work so hard for your business and supporting the community … and then you just feel like things get ripped out from under you,” she said.

“Business is hard enough without having extra challenges thrown in the mix.”

Formosa Gardens has operated in Ballarat for 47 years.

Police confirmed they were investigating the burglary and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or online.
