Sebastopol home ‘fully engulfed’ in suspicious fire

Police are treating a house fire in Ballarat’s south as suspicious. See the video.

A home in Ballarat’s south caught fire in late January in a blaze police have labelled suspicious.

Firefighters attended the property on Hertford St, Sebastopol about 11.50am on January 27 where smoke plumed from a single-storey house.

Crews used breathing apparatuses to inspect the scene and had it under control by 12.11pm.

Several police detectives were present, and although paramedics arrived, nobody required emergency treatment.

Powercor and the relevant gas company were also notified about the incident.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said officers were told the house was “fully engulfed in flames”.

“An investigation into the fire, which is believed to be suspicious, is ongoing,” she said.

Police spoke with a 53-year-old man, who was released pending further enquiries.
