A rock climber has been hospitalised after falling 15m from a cliff face in the Grampians on Tuesday afternoon.

Police, SES, and firefighters were called to the Grampians Peak Trail in Laharum about 2.30pm to find and help a Ballarat man aged 37.

Police said a fellow rock climber raised the alarm.

An Ambulance Victoria rescue helicopter was able to fly the patient to the Royal Melbourne Hospital about 7.30pm.

He was in a stable condition with upper and lower body injuries.

Ballarat police recommended properly planning hiking trips, telling family and friends about your intended route, packing sufficient food and water, and dressing for conditions.

“The GPS in your phone relies on the mobile network to render maps, and if you’re lucky to have reception, they often lack detail required for bushwalking,” they said.

“So make sure you have a detailed map either on paper or downloaded to your phone before setting off.”
