A Ballarat man will face court after allegedly making a death threat to a federal politician.
Federal police have accused a 51-year-old Ballarat man of threatening a federal MP by emailing their electorate office on March 27.
The AFP allegedly traced the messages to the man’s personal email address and searched his home on April 3.
He was charged with using a carriage service to make a threat to kill and using a carriage service to menace, harass, or offend.
The former charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment and the latter five years’ imprisonment.
The man was bailed and will face court again in June.
AFP Detective Superintendent Simone Butcher said AFP supported political expression, but would not tolerate criminal threats.
“The AFP will identify and locate individuals who commit these serious crimes and prosecute them,” Det Supt Butcher said.
