Ballarat: Man hiding in green waste bin arrested on Prince Street Alfredton

A man allegedly responsible for a string of crimes in Ballarat hid in a compost bin for 45 minutes as he tried to evade police.

A man allegedly responsible for a string of crimes in Ballarat hid in a green waste compost bin for 45 minutes as he tried to evade police.

But the man’s unusual hiding spot came unstuck when the police helicopter noticed a heat source coming from the bin and were able to alert police on the ground, who arrested him.

A patrolling police unit saw a man on the roof of a property in Alfredton about 2pm Saturday, September 3.

The man allegedly took off and was followed on foot by police who were checking backyards for the offender.

The police air wing then told patrolling police about the heat source coming from a green waste compost bin in a front yard on Prince St.

Officers opened the bin and found the man they were looking for, who had been hiding in the bin for about 45 minutes.

He was arrested without further incident.

The 28-year-old Ballarat East man has been charged with criminal damage, trespass, theft of motor vehicle and burglary.

He was remanded to appear in Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on September 5.
