Ballarat Head of Lake winners crowned

Action is underway at Ballarat where more than 600 rowers from seven schools are competing in the Head of the Lake rowing regatta.

It is the 108th iteration of the annual Lake Wendouree inter-school spectacular.

This year, 603 athletes from Ballarat High, Clarendon, St. Patrick’s, Ballarat Grammar, Loreto, Damascus, and Phoenix are taking part in 34 events from 9am on Sunday.

Ballarat Grammar has triumphed for the second year running in the 2022 Boys’ Head of the Lake at Ballarat’s Lake Wendouree.

The strong Grammar crew won comfortably ahead of a fast finishing four from St Patrick’s College, with Ballarat Clarendon College in third position.

The Grammar crew was coxed by Jess Norton and featured rowers Charles Savage, George Follett, Will Clarke and Hugh Bond.

It followed Ballarat Clarendon College being named the 2022 Girls’ Head of the Lake champion after a powerhouse performance blew away their opposition from Ballarat Grammar and Loreto College in the headline event of the day.

It meant back-to-back wins for the girls in the red, yellow, blue and black as they stormed away to win by several boat lengths in perfect conditions and in front of thousands of people at Lake Wendouree.

Loreto College had dominated most of the girls’ races throughout the day but were no match for the Clarendon crew in the premier race.

The winning Clarendon girls’ crew was coxed by Baeley Tucker and featured rowers Katie Jackson, Lucy Richardson, Ellie McClure and Ruby Lovel.

There was more good news in the boy’s premiership event for Ballarat Clarendon College when it was determined that, for the second year in a row, they had won the Harold Deveson Cup.

Across all boys’ events on the day, Ballarat Clarendon College amassed 46 premiership points to finish well clear of Ballarat Grammar, who finished second with 35 points, followed by St Patrick’s College in third with 26 points.

In the girls’ premiership division, Loreto College claimed the J H Netherway Cup after winning 11 of the 15 races on offer.

Loreto accumulated a massive 50 points to finish clear ahead of Ballarat Clarendon College on 33, with Ballarat Grammar in third place with 30 points.

The Year 9 Ballarat Clarendon College boys’ division 1 crew won the first boys’ race of the day, winning by a boat length ahead of a crew from St Patrick’s College.

The Loreto College Year 9 division one girls’ crew won the first race of the day at the 2022 Ballarat Head of the Lake. In perfect conditions, Loreto won by two boat lengths ahead of a crew from Damascus College.

Loreto College continued their winning ways in the Year division 2 race, winning ahead of Ballarat Grammar and Ballarat Clarendon College.

Ballarat Clarendon College won the Year 9 division 2 race with Ballarat Grammar coming second.

Loreto college’s early dominance continued when they won the Year 9 division 3 girls’ event.

The Ballarat Grammar year 10 division 5 crew won their race on Sunday, bringing a smile to the face of their cox Milla Kingdom-Pearce who is celebrating her birthday today.

In the closest race of the day, Ballarat Grammar won the Year 9 division 3 boys’ race by a canvass ahead of Ballarat Clarendon College with St Patrick’s College finishing third.

Ballarat Grammar won the Year 9 boys’ division four race ahead of Ballarat Clarendon College with Ballarat High School in third position.

Loreto College completed a clean sweep of the Year 9 girls’ events after winning the Division 5, 6 and 7 race.

St Patrick’s College won its first race with victory in the Year 9 division 5, 6 and 7 boys’ race.

As the event moved into the Year 10 division, Loreto College continued its dominance with victory in the division one girls’ event ahead of Ballarat Clarendon College and Ballarat Grammar.

Ballarat Clarendon College managed to win the Year 10 boys’ division one race with St Patrick’s College finishing second.

And in one of the closest finishes of the day Loreto College won the Year 10 division two girls’ race, narrowly edging out a crew from Ballarat Clarendon College.

Meanwhile Ballarat Grammar won the Year 10 boys’ division four event.

Loreto College’s stranglehold on the girls’ races was broken in the Year 10 division 5-8 race when Ballarat Clarendon College won in a tight finish.

The Ballarat Grammar year 10 division 5 crew won their race, bringing a smile to the face of their cox Milla Kingdom-Pearce who is celebrating her birthday today.

In one of the best races of the day Loreto College’s Year 10 division three team won, narrowly edging out Ballarat Clarendon College.

In the final Year 10 race on the card, Ballarat Clarendon College dominated to win the boys’ Year 10 division three event ahead of Ballarat Grammar.

In the first of the open category races Ballarat Clarendon College girls won the fifths race ahead of Loreto College and Phoenix College.

In the boys’ open fifths, St Patrick’s College won comfortably ahead of a Ballarat High School crew.

In the only girls’ double scull event on the card, Ballarat Grammar won the open division one race ahead of Ballarat Clarendon College.

In the first of the 2000m races of the day, Loreto College dominated in the open fourths girls’ event with the yellow and blue crews finishing first and second.

Loreto College continued their winning ways in the open division three girls race with a strong win over Ballarat Clarendon College.

In the boys’ open thirds race over 2000m St Patrick’s College held off a fast finishing mg Ballarat Clarendon College to claim victory.

In the girls’ open seconds race the Ballarat Grammar crew scored a stirring win over Loreto College.

Ballarat Grammar won the boys’ open seconds race with a strong victory ahead of Ballarat Clarendon College and Damascus College.

Ballarat Associated Schools is streaming the event, which may be viewed below.

School chants have been banned from the regatta, and presentations will be held at the relevant schools at a later time because of Covid risk, according to the competition program.
