New artist’s impressions have been released for the Ballarat Base Hospital redevelopment, showing off the hospital’s proposed new entrances.

The $541.6 million expansion of the hospital, supposed to be completed in 2027, will include an energy plant, emergency department, expanded critical care floor, women and children’s centre, 100 extra beds, and more, in order to treat an expected 18,000 more emergency patients and 14,500 inpatients each year.

A committee led by former premier Steve Bracks met five times last year and the state government conducted two online surveys through Engage Victoria.

The Victorian Health Building Authority released the resulting consultation report this week, listing the redevelopment features considered most important.

In regard to health care, emergency treatment topped the list, followed by access to specialists and elective surgery.

Physically, those surveyed wanted more carparking, better signs, and maps or other directional aids inside the hospital.

The report said people also wanted more room in waiting areas, comfortable seating, and food and drinks.

In outdoor areas, they wanted seating and benches, native plants, and shade, among other requests.

Melbourne-based architects Lyons said in the report it would incorporate Ballarat’s existing look into the hospital design.

“We know how important the Ballarat landscape is to the community and we have tailored a design to incorporate these natural elements, drawing on Lake Wendouree and the indigenous flora, fauna and geology for inspiration,” it said.

“From the colour palette, to the materials used, this redevelopment will have a uniquely-Ballarat look and feel.”

Further designs are expected to be released later this year.
