An abandoned school site has gone up in flames in Wangaratta.

Fire Rescue Victoria and CFA firefighters spent Sunday evening battling the blaze which erupted at the old school site in Vincent St.

A Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said crews were called to the scene just after 2.30pm following calls to triple-000.

They found the building, about 20m by 40m in size, ablaze.

The spokesperson said due to structural collapse, firefighters attacked the fire externally using aerial appliances.

They then used an excavator to gain access to where the fire started.

The fire has now been extinguished but crews are expected to remain on scene Monday to monitor the situation.
