Raiders Sports Club to cancel New Year’s Eve fireworks amid COVID uncertainty

With COVID-19 restrictions constantly changing, there’s a lot of uncertainty around upcoming holidays, especially around the Wodonga footy club’s popular fireworks. But a decision is close.

It is unlikely the Raiders Sports Club’s New Year’s Eve event will go ahead in Wodonga this year.
It is unlikely the Raiders Sports Club’s New Year’s Eve event will go ahead in Wodonga this year.

Wodonga residents may enter the new year with more of a fizzle than a bang as the Raiders Sports Club’s fireworks event looks to be cancelled.

While an official decision is yet to be made Raiders Sports Club committee member Mick Wernert said he was “99 per cent sure the event will be canned”.

“It’s mainly because of the uncertainty,” Mr Wernert said.

“Even though things are starting to open up now, we’re still unsure how many people we’d be able to have and how we’d be able to do it.

“Just because of restrictions and how we’d have to enforce them and the manpower involved, especially at that time of year.

“But generally it’s just a public safety thing.”

Mr Wernert said cancelling the event would be a major kick to the club’s fundraising efforts.

“It’s worth a lot of money to us as a football club,” he said.

“It’s one of top fundraisers we have for the year.”
