Matthew Andrew Daniel: Man caught red-handed after stealing from Myer

A thief who stole thousands from an Albury department store was caught red-handed when the bag he was carrying broke — but he still denied doing it.

A thief who stole thousands from an Albury department store was caught red-handed when the bag he was carrying broke — spilling everything over the floor.

Matthew Andrew Daniel pleaded guilty to aggravated break and enter at Albury Local Court on Monday.

Court documents reveal Daniel and an unknown accomplice smashed a glass door to Myer Centrepoint about 12.25am on June 8.

Daniel and his accomplice stole four perfumes, seven pairs of Adidas sweats, five hoodies, two pairs of sunglasses, and The Ordinary skincare — valued at $2392.88.

The pair, who were caught on CCTV cameras, tried to put the items in a brown paper bag, but the bag broke — and the stolen goods spilled onto the floor.

Daniel and his co-accused left the store at 12.32am.

Police arrived at 1.02am and found some items scattered on the ground including sunglasses, a bracelet, perfume, and a hoodie.

Police saw Daniel wander through the David St carpark and spoke to him about the robbery.

But Daniel said he knew nothing about it.

Police found Daniel later and took photos of his clothes, which they later found matched the clothes of one of the robbers in the CCTV footage.

Daniel was arrested on June 10 at the Housing NSW offices in Albury.

Daniel’s defence solicitor asked his client’s matter be adjourned for six weeks for a sentencing assessment report.

Magistrate Richard Funston was not impressed with Daniel’s offending.

“I think it’s pretty clear Mr Daniel is facing a jail sentence,” Mr Funston said.

Daniel will appear at Albury Local Court again on August 2.
