Mathoura fatal crash: Teen charged with negligent driving after fatal crash

A teen has been charged with negligent driving after a fatal crash which killed a 16-year-old boy earlier this month.

A teenaged boy has been charged over a fatal crash in Mathoura earlier this month.

A teenage boy has been charged following investigations into a single-vehicle fatal crash near Deniliquin earlier this month.

About 12.30am on Saturday, January 9, emergency services were called to Edward River Rd, Mathoura, about 35km south of Deniliquin, following reports of a crash.

Police have been told five teenage boys – aged between 14 and 16 – were travelling in a white Toyota utility, when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting kangaroos and lost control of the vehicle.

A 16-year-old boy died at the scene. The four other occupants of the car were not physically injured.

Officers from Murray River Police District established a crime scene and commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Following inquiries, a 16-year-old boy was issued a court attendance notice for negligent driving occasioning death and learner driver unaccompanied.

He is due to appear in a children’s court on Wednesday, April 7.
