A young thief who put the lives of children at risk in a high speed chase with police, mounting the curb in a 60km zone, has copped a spray in court.

Magistrate Ian Watkins told Jake John Crighton Cromb he was lucky he hadn’t killed a child during his reckless attempt to evade police in Wodonga last year.

‘It could have been tragic,” he said.

Wodonga Magistrates’ court heard that on January 3, 2019, police pursued the 20-year-old travelling up Melrose Dve doing 80km/h in a 60km zone.

Crighton Cromb mounted a curve on Melrose Dve and drove the wrong way around a round about on the Hume Highway to evade police, before the front tyre of his vehicle burst and he stopped.

“You were aware the police where there because they had activated their lights and sirens …” Magistrate Watkins said.

“It was in an area of Melrose Dve where it was common for children to be on the footpath – it could have been tragic.

“You could have killed someone on that footpath only to avoid police, and it didn’t work.”

Magistrate Watkins noted that Crighton Cromb has also committed a serious amount of offending in 2020.

“This year hasn’t been a good year for you,” he said.

“February this year involved a petrol drive off when you were entering Victoria in a stolen car.

“September this year tailor made golf clubs stolen in Albury were located at your address.”

Crighton Cromb was remanded in custody on September 30 this year, and has spent 33 days in prison.

Magistrate Watkins sentenced Crighton Cromb to 60 days in custody, including the time served pre-sentence, with a 12 month community corrections order following his release.

Crighton Cromb‘s license was also suspended for six months.

“If you keep offending you’re going to be spiralling in and out of jail,” Magistrate Watkins said.

“You’re a young man and I think you’ve got prospects for rehabilitation.”
