Primary school students were evacuated after a car crashed into a home in Albury’s north, causing a severe gas leak.
Emergency services were called to Cheyenne Dr, Lavington, following reports of a vehicle crashing into a house after school drop-offs on Monday morning.
Police believe the crash caused damage to the house’s gas main pipe, which resulted in the leak.
“No one was inside the home at the time, and there are no reports of injuries,” a police spokesman said.
The driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old man, was uninjured.
“Paramedics assessed two people, but they did not go to the hospital,” a NSW Ambulance spokeswoman said.
Police immediately evacuated Hume Primary School and the local area as a precaution.
The school informed parents of primary students to pick up their children from a nearby park, where they were safely escorted.
The school remained shut on Monday, with all staff evacuated.
Kellie Fox said it was very “scary” for kids who were evacuated.
“[It’s] very scary and traumatic for the kids; they don‘t understand why they are being evacuated as they can’t see gas, so they don’t know,” she said.
Caitlin Hope Jade Turner said the gas smell was “very strong” when she picked up her daughter.
“In seconds, something could [have] easily gone wrong,” she said.
The owner of the home, who was not inside the house when the accident happened, took to social media asking residents to “please keep an eye out” for their dog, who seemed to have gone missing after the accident.
“Small, very friendly black staffy, Jess, going quite grey. She was inside the house. I don‘t know if she’s still there or got out,” she said.
Albury police were contacted for comment.
