A woman has required two surgeries after an unlicensed truck driver ploughed through an intersection in Narromine, T-boning her car.
George Pafralis faced Albury Local Court today pleading guilty to negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, and driving with a suspended license.
At approximately 3.30pm on May 4, 2018, Pafralis was driving a Kenworth prime mover with a full load of freight down Manildra St in Narromine, with his partner in the passenger seat.
At the intersection with the Mitchell Hwy, Pafralis failed to give way and ploughed straight into the driver’s side of a Kia Cerato on the highway.
The truck pushed the car through the intersection for about 70m before coming to a stop.
the driver of the car, a woman, sustained horrific injuries incuding having the skin from the right side of her face “degloved”, her eye socket smashed, aher pelvis shattered and her right clavicle fracture, ribs and face fractured.
Police said Pafralis claimed he did not see the Kia Cerato at all, and had slowed down to turn right at the intersection.
Police collected CCTV footage from a nearby motel, and witness statements suggested that the accused had not slowed down, and was likely going straight through the intersection, not turning right.
Pafralis’s defence solicitor said the 51-year-old was very remorseful for his actions.
Magistrate Miranda Moody said Pafralis had clearly not looked when he came to the intersection.
“It’s a very sad matter,” Ms Moody said.
“It just shows that in a split second a negligent driver can change the life of somebody.
“While I accept the offender is remorseful, he was clearly negligent.”
Pafralis was sentenced to a 12 month community corrections order, fine $1200, and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
