A car crash on the infamous Lavington Five Guys intersection left motorists in Albury without a traffic signal for hours on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of Mate St and Union Rd in North Albury at 12.10pm on Tuesday after a blue Subaru XV hit a traffic light, causing it to topple over.

A NSW police spokeswoman told the Herald Sun the blue Subaru XV collided with a black Ford Territory before going over the traffic island.

“The drivers of both vehicles were treated at the scene for minor injuries but did not require hospitalisation,” she said.

Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry said the crash caused spillage of hazardous material that the firefighters rendered safe.

“After we cleared the area at 1:42pm, an exclusion zone was put in place for the traffic department to come and fix the light,” he said.

The traffic light was out for over 10 hours, causing significant delays as motorists were forced to take detours.

The intersection is infamous for collisions.

Residents took to social media to express their frustration with the intersection.

“Good Oil’ five ways claim another accident. Obviously people can’t determine between red & green lights,” wrote Scott O’Brien.

Martika Edwards wrote, “I legit witnessed it all happen. I was right next to the black car that got hit, and geez, it was scary! Need to be more careful people while driving.”

The driver of the Subaru – a 75-year-old man – was issued a traffic infringement notice.

Just days before, the emergency services attended another car crash involving multiple vehicles, where a red Holden Commodore lost its control before colliding with other cars on Union Rd.

The intersection is also dangerous for pedestrians.

Vickie Priscina appealed on social media to help her find a white car driving “erratically” at the intersection.

“It nearly cleaned me up going through a give-way sign near the five ways, just drove straight through,” she said.

Albury council has been contacted for comment.
