An Albury businessman said he “couldn’t help himself” from sexually abusing a teenage boy he met at church.

Alan Clinton Williams, 57, was jailed for two years after he pleaded guilty to four counts of intentionally sexually touching a child under 16, and a rolled up charge of grooming a child under 14-years for unlawful sexual activity.

The court heard Williams, who owns Genesis Home Maintenance, met the young teenager at church before he started sexually abusing him.

Williams first touched the child’s genitals while they watched a movie together in his North Albury home in 2020 but the abuse continued for eight months.

The child’s mother, in tears, said her son had been self-harming and was suicidal as a result of Williams’ actions.

“I felt unsafe in the community and my own home,” the victim’s mother read from her child’s statement.

“I no longer trust people in the same way as a result of what’s happened.”

When the victim was first assaulted court documents revealed the teenage boy asked Williams to stop.

Williams said: “Sorry I couldn’t help myself, I promise it won’t happen again”.

Williams’ wife was home at the time, but was asleep.

Only three weeks later Williams grabbed the victim’s genitals on the outside of his pants again while watching a movie.

When the victim asked him to stop, Williams said: “Just calm down and relax.”

Williams then put his other hand inside the victim‘s pants before the victim removed them.

Williams assaulted the victim a third time while watching a movie.

When the offender tried to grab the child’s penis, the victim stood up and walked to the door.

When Williams followed, still trying to grab at the victim’s groin, the victim slid to the floor to get away.

Williams wrestled with his victim and pinned his arms down for about three minutes.

“Stop trying to pull away,” Williams said.

The court heard, the victim tried to knee Williams before Williams let him go and they continued watching the movie.

On the fourth occasion Williams touched the boy’s penis while watching a movie, the victim asked him to stop and moved away.

The victim stayed at Williams’ house that night, and the next morning while walking to a cafe, Williams apologised to the victim.

“Sorry about last night, I won’t do it again,” Williams said.

“You said that the first time it happened,” the victim said.

“I’m actually sorry this time, I won’t do it again.”

That evening, as the victim was about to leave the offender’s home, Williams said: “Want me to give you a blow job?”

When the victim refused, Williams persisted saying: “You could give me one also.”

A short time later, the victim’s mother noticed her child had started acting out of character and searched through her son’s phone.

She found Snapchat messages to a school friend describing the abuse.

The victim’s mother screenshot the messages and took her son to Albury Police Station.

Williams was arrested.

Department of Public Prosecutions representative Mary-Beth McFarlane said Williams had abused a position of trust by grooming the victim.

Williams’ defence solicitor Ian McGuiness said while his client and the victim had met at church, the position of trust wasn’t the same as if it had been with a teacher, priest or coach.

“There is remorse demonstrated,” Mr McGuiness said.

“It’s conceded the offending elevates.”

Magistrate Richard Funston said a report from a psychologist said Williams showed remorse and was “disgusted” by his own actions.

He acknowledged this was Williams’ first offence.

Williams was sentenced to 24 months jail on Monday with a non-parole period of 12 months backdated to December 17 2020.

He will be eligible for parole on December 16 this year.
