Spike in ambo call-outs on horror haze day

Hundreds of people needed emergency relief after a thick smoke haze swamped Melbourne and surrounds yesterday, with a massive spike in ambulance call outs. And the haze is here to stay for a few days yet.

CFA calls for on-the-spot fines for firestarters

The CFA is calling for instant fines for anyone who starts campfires, lights barbecues or uses machinery on a total fire ban day as firefighters try to crack down on illegal burns while the state braces for a scorching week.

Deputy Vic Nats leader (and Coalition water spokeswoman) Steph Ryan is working on a proposal to enlarge the Buffalo dam in northeast Victoria. The Nats see a Lake Buffalo expansion as something that can be done as part of the Murray Darling Basin tri-state agreement, effectively to offset the 160GL a year that evaporates from Lake Victoria, which is South Australia's largest off-river storage. Victoria loses out in dam funding

New South Wales and Queensland have secured commitments of almost $1.1 billion from the federal government for new dams and irrigation projects while Premier Daniel Andrews has been slammed for not availing of funds.

Digging resumes as tunnel standoff ends

Work on the Metro Tunnel has restarted, days after workers downed tools in a shock shutdown. It comes after a dispute over cost blowouts on the multibillion-dollar project with the Andrews Government.
