Expect masterful performances from living legends, big-budget affairs and dramatic true stories before the year ends Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro reuniting for a gritty crime drama.

This is your ultimate guide to what to see at the movies in 2019.

The Last Jedi review: Star Wars movie a must-see

Best and worst Christmas movies of all time

THE POST

JANUARY

Expect Oscar nominations to be plentiful for this drama based on The Washington Post’s Pentagon Papers investigation. Along with the direction of Steven Spielberg, we will be treated to living legends Meryl Streep (Post owner Kay Graham) and Tom Hanks (editor Ben Bradlee) together on screen for the first time.

I, TONYA

JANUARY

Another dramatic true story and Oscar magnet. A proper screen adaptation of the tawdry tale of how US figure skater Tonya Harding conspired to break the leg of rival Nancy Kerrigan is long overdue. Australian Margot Robbie is favoured to land her first Best Actress Oscar nom.

PHANTOM THREAD

FEBRUARY

Important fact 1: Daniel Day-Lewis is one of the greatest movie actors of all time. For his past 10 roles, he has been nominated for a Best Actor Oscar five times (winning three). Important fact 2: this is the last chance you get to see the master. Day-Lewis has announced his retirement, so his performance as a reclusive dressmaker to the royal family in the 1950s is a must-see.

READY PLAYER ONE

MARCH

This intriguing big-budget affair (estimated spend of $250 million) is the one serious sci-fi fans will be dropping everything to see. A clever plot is set in 2045, when overpopulation has driven many people inside a virtual-reality world where they can work, attend school and chase their dreams.

The director is Steven Spielberg, while an eclectic ensemble cast includes T.J. Miller (TV’s Silicon Valley), Olivia Cooke (Bates Motel) and our own Ben Mendelsohn.

ISLE OF DOGS

APRIL

The great Wes Anderson follows his box-office smash-hit The Grand Budapest Hotel with a much-anticipated return to stop-motion animation. Anderson’s last foray in the format was The Fantastic Mr Fox. This story focuses on a bleak future for canines after dog flu sweeps the world and forces pooches into exile from their human masters.

A STAR IS BORN

MAY

This high-profile rendition (Hollywood’s fourth try) of the classic fame-game tear-jerker had Beyonce attached for yonks before she walked. For a replacement, producers settled for what may seem like a complete unknown called Stefani Germanotta. But virtually the whole world knows her as Lady Gaga. Therefore the hype on her blockbuster musical weepie with co-star (and director) Bradley Cooper will be beyond huge.

SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY

MAY

Strap yourself in, Force followers: the Star Wars assembly line is picking up speed.
A stand-alone entry in the canon, this will be an origin story that should have been titled Han Solo: The Early Years. If you’ve wondered how Han (played by Alden Ehrenreich of Hail, Caesar! fame) got his start as a space smuggler and buddied up with his Wookiee bestie Chewbacca, here’s your chance.

SICARIO 2: SOLDADO

JUNE

The first Sicario was one of 2015’s best films, but it ended in such a decisive way that a sequel was far from anyone’s mind. Let’s hope it matches the standard of its predecessor. Again, the setting is the Texas-Mexico border, where CIA agent Josh Brolin and his black-ops shadow Benicio Del Toro are doing their best to divert and decimate drug traffic.

SCARFACE

AUGUST

The decision to revisit and reimagine Al Pacino’s 1983 mad masterpiece is bound to put hundreds of millions of fans on edge. However, this screenplay carries the gilt-edged names of Terence Winter (The Wolf of Wall Street) and the Coen brothers (No Country for Old Men). Casting and shooting details remain shrouded in mystery.

THE IRISHMAN

DECEMBER

The creative reunion so many have wished for — and everyone thought impossible — has come to pass.
The director is Martin Scorsese. The lead actor is Robert De Niro. Their previous collaborations include Taxi Driver, Raging Bull and Goodfellas.

Who won’t be game to buy a ticket to this gritty crime drama about the murder of US union boss Jimmy Hoffa? Especially when Joe Pesci, Harvey Keitel and Al Pacino (as Hoffa) are all aboard as well?
